Deaths in Pakistan US strikesA suspected US missile strike has killed at least seven people in Pakistan’s northwestern tribal region.

One missile hit a vehicle in the village of Wana killing four people, while another strike killed three in a nearby village, both in South Waziristan on Monday, Pakistani intelligence officials said.

“Tribesmen opened fire on the drones after the attacks,” a resident of Wana told Reuters news agency.

A British soldier was killed by enemy gunfire in Afghanistan yesterday – the fifth British serviceman to be killed there in three days.
The soldier from 29 Commando Royal Artillery was at a Forward Operating Base in the Gereshk area of Helmand Province when he was wounded.

Truckers refuse to haul NATO, US supplies

PESHAWAR: Pakistani truckers are refusing to haul vital supplies to NATO and US forces in Afghanistan because of mounting attacks along the main route, a transporters’ association said Monday.

Pakistani troops recently began escorting convoys through the Khyber Pass to the border to protect them from Taliban ambushes. Western military officials insist their Afghan operations are not at risk.

Three Canadian troops have been killed in Afghanistan, bringing Canada’s death toll there to 103 since its military mission in the country began in 2002.

The three were killed when a roadside bomb exploded near their vehicle in the Arghandab district of southern Kandahar province on Saturday, a defence ministry statement said.

The military said in a statement a fourth soldier was also wounded in the blast.

The case against the soldiers, Captain Roger Hill and 1st Sergeant Tommy Scott, both of the 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, was prompted by “a report” within their unit about the possibility that detainees had been abused in an incident in eastern Afghanistan earlier this year, according to a statement issued by the American military command.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the suicide bomb, the second in Kabul in three days, but similar attacks have been claimed by Taleban-led extremists waging an insurgency here. A German foreign ministry spokesman in Berlin said a vehicle belonging to its embassy in Kabul had been targeted. “The sole occupant of the vehicle, an Afghan employee of the embassy, was injured,” the spokesman said.
